My First Impressions

AirVPN, based in Italy, was founded in 2012 by a group of activisits, hacktivists, and hackers. AirVPN defines themselves as “the air to breathe the real Internet.”

My first impression about the website is above average. The main page includes everything necessary for prospective users. You can find features and pricing related to the VPN. AirVPN differs from other VPN providers with its forum and forum-like FAQ section. It is unusual, but not necessarily bad. Only minuses that I have noticed are, lack of multi-language website and live chat support.

Does AirVPN keep logs?

AirVPN mentions about its logging policy both in FAQ page and Privacy Policy.

On the privacy policy page, it is stated that “activity traffic and/or traffic content and/or IP adresses of the customers or users are not inspected, logged or stored into any mass storage device.”

In simple words,

According to info on the website, AirVPN does not keep connection logs, IP address logs, or traffic logs.

However, Comparitech’s article about the VPN logs mentions that connection logs are stored, but in aggregated form, so the data is not associated with a specific user.

Does AirVPN bypass Deep Packet Inspection (DPI)?

Countries like China, Turkey, Russia, UAE, Egypt implement firewalls that block access to VPN services. As an example, China uses the Great Wall of China (GFW) system to block most VPNs and proxies. Some VPN providers offer extra protocols, often called Stealth VPN or anti-DPI protocols, that help users to bypass VPN blocks and access free internet.

AirVPNshines in these features and offers three protocols to bypass VPN blocking firewalls:

 – OpenVPN over SSH

 – OpenVPN over SSL

 – OpenVPN over Tor

But, what is the different between the three?

What is Price-Performance Ratio of AirVPN? (Pricing & Features)

AirVPN offers a simple pricing plan. You can get AirVPN for 3 days (if you want to try it) for $2.30, 1 month for about $8.30. If you buy AirVPN for 3 months or 6 months, you will pay about $6 per month. And if you subscribe for 1 year, then you will pay about $3.70 per month (which is approx. $0.75 per device). If you are using several devices, or would like to share a VPN with friends or family, then the pricing is very reasonable.

AirVPN accepts Paypal, credit card and various cryptocurrency payments from Bitcoin to Zencash. Also, AirVPN offers a free trial, but you need to send a message to the AirVPN team through their contact form. Alternatively, you can test AirVPN for 3 days for €2, if you want to try AirVPN before investing for a longer period. Even if you made a payment, no need to worry because AirVPN offers 3 days money-back guarantee.

What features are offered by AirVPN?

– Supported Platforms

AirVPN supports Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, Routers and Chrome OS. However, if you are using Android or iOS device you need to do the configurations manually using OpenVPN, which is not practical. AirVPN has its own software named “Eddie” which works on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.

– Supported Protocols

AirVPN focuses only on the OpenVPN protocol, stating that other protocols are unsecure. As mentioned above, there are three VPN protocols that use OpenVPN with SSH, SSL, or Tor tunnels to bypass the Deep Packet Inspection system used by some ISPs.

– Number of Servers

AirVPN has over 240 servers, including multi-hop servers, in 22 countries (I counted them). However, I should note that AirVPN does not offer multi-hop (or double-hop) servers for direct connections, rather those servers are used to avoid geolocation censorship.

In addition, AirVPN got a good rating on Simple VPN Comparison Table, thanks to its logging policy, pricing and a good choice of servers. On the VPN Comparison Table, the VPN is in the top 5 most affordable VPNs (price per device a month.)
