My First Impression

BolehVPN is a VPN company that was founded in Malaysia and registered in Seychelles, away from Five eyes Countries. THe company was founded after increasing internet censorship and content throttling by the Malaysian government. Today, as noted by the VPN provider, they have become one of the largest VPN companies in South-East Asia.

The website leaves a good first impression, thanks to a colorful, well-designed website. The frontpage covers almost all information you may need about BolehVPN, for futher questions you can visit FAQ page, which is hidden under the support page or visit BolehVPN’s forum. However, it is a bit disappointing to see no multilangiuage version of the website and the lack of online chat.

Does BolehVPN keep logs?

BolehVPN has good news for people who do not like logging VPN providers.

BolehVPN does not log:

  • traffic (For Example: user activity)
  • IP addresses
  • connection (badwidths usage, timestamps etc.)

It should noted that bandwidth usage of a server is collected, but not of an individual user.

Also, BolehVPN may activate logs for when unusul activity takes place.

BolehVPN asks only for a valid email address and a username. Giving your real name is not mandatory, with the exception of some payment methods.

Speaking of payment methods, BolehVPN advises to use anounymous cryptocurrency payments, because with payment methods, like credit card, your identifiable information will be handed over to law enforcement, if it is requested.

Does BolehVPN bypass Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) or similar VPN blocks?

Countries like China, Turkey, Russia etc. implement firewalls that block access to VPN services. As an example China uses the Great Wall of China (GFW) system to block most VPNs and proxies. Some VPN services use extra protocols so that users in those countries can bypass VPN block.

BolehVPN does not give information about protocols they offer, so one can only infer from installation guides what types of protocols are available. OpenVPN, L2TP and Shadowsocks are protocols (and a proxy) that have installation guides on the website.

On the frontpage there is a mention of BolehVPN’s ability to obfuscate VPN traffic to mask VPN use.

BolehVPN offers 6 Traffic Methods for OpenVPN, that vary according to the needs of users.

  • Proxied: uses SOCKS proxy
  • Fully Routed: all data goes through VPN
  • Surfing/Streaming: P2P not allowed, useful for online streaming
  • Cloak: able to bypass deep packet inspection or similar firewalls
  • TCP Servers: useful to bypass campus/corporate firewalls
  • BolehGEO: used to access sites that are restricted US address

Thanks to the 1 day free trial offered by BolehVPN, I can test it with zero cost.

Testing BolehVPN

I tested BolehVPN on a Windows 7 64-bit PC, and an Android phone running Android 6.0. I am testing ADSL internet provided by Turkmen Telecom, and mobile internet provided by TMCELL.

For Windows BolehVPNVPN offers OpenVPN and a standalone client software. BolehVPN’s client is easy to use and offers a bunch of features like: adding a proxy, kill switch, DNS leak protection etc.

As expected non-Cloak or non-obfuscated traffic methods fail to connect. Afterwards, I tested Cloak traffic methods, to my surprise not all of them worked. I was able to connect only on CloakRoutedSingapore and CloakProxyGermany. So, the good news is that BolehVPN evades the deep packet inspection, and the bad news is not on all servers.

I had similar results with my android device. When I was connected to WLAN and mobile network using BolehVPN app, which is based on OpenVPN app, it connected to the blocked content easily. The app is not listed on Google Play, however you can download it from the website.

However, my phone could not connect to the VPN using OpenVPN app.

To sum up, BolehVPN managed to bypass the firewall in Turkmenistan on the Windows and Android platforms. Unfortunately, in the test BolehVPN worked only on 2 servers out of 35 available.

If you are considering to buy  BolehVPN subscription, I suggest you to check Country Guide section, or alternatively try free 24-hour trial, to check whether it works in your country.

Is BolehVPN affordable? (BolehVPN’s pricing)

BolehVPN has a simple pricing as shown on the picture below. If you buy yearly subscription, then it will cost 6.66$ per month or 2.22 per device. The pricing is expensive, considering that cheaper alternatives are available.

BolehVPN accepts major credit cards, PayPal, Yandex cards, Wire Transfer, Bitcoin and 4 different cryptocurrencies.

If you wand to test BolehVPN,  you can enjoy 24-hour free trial, which activates automatically once you sign up.

BolehVPN offers 14-day money-back-guarantee, if you are not happy with their service. However, I should note that refunds exclude cryptocurrency payments in general (there may be exceptions).
