My First Impressions

ExpressVPN is a VPN provider based in British Virgin Islands. And, yes it is one of the most advertised and probably one of the biggest VPN companies in the industry.

The website leaves a very good impression. The website has a good design and an easy navigation. I can safely say that the website is among top ten best VPN websites. Additionally, ExpressVPN has multi language website and a live chat support.

Does EarthVPN keep logs?

On the FAQ, ExpressVPN briefly explains that traffic logs and connection logs of their users are not stored, but gives no information about IP address logs.  Also, it is stated that info that is collected by ExpressVPN is not sufficient to be linked to a specific user.

On the privacy policy page, ExpressVPN provides a detailed explanation of its logging policy. It is clearly stated that ExpressVPN does not store traffic logs, IP addresses or connection logs.

Real IP addresses of the users are only collected when you use MediaStreamer, ExpressVPN‘s service for consoles like Apple TV and other devices that don’t support a VPN.

ExpressVPN only collects info about your app version, successful connection and total sum of data transferred.

So summing up, ExpressVPN does not collect:

  • traffic logs (user activity)
  • IP address logs
  • connection logs (bandwidth, timestamps etc.)

Does ExpressVPN bypass Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) or similar VPN blocking firewalls?

Countries like China, Turkey, Russia, UAE, Egypt implement firewalls that block access to VPN services. As an example, China uses the Great Wall of China (GFW) system to block most VPNs and proxies. Some VPN providers offer extra protocols, often called Stealth VPN or anti-DPI protocols, that help users to bypass VPN blocks and access free internet. ExpressVPN uses an undisclosed technique to evade VPN blocking firewalls.

And, here I have collected some random reviews, which show that ExpressVPN works well against deep packet inspection. It is also a sign that, if it works in China, there is a possibility that ExpressVPN works in other VPN blocking countries.

As usual I tested ExpressVPN, but this time around I bought a subscription, instead of using their free trial.

Testing ExpressVPN

I tested ExpressVPN on Windows 7 PC, and an Android phone running Android 6.0.1 .I am testing ADSL internet provided by local state telecom ADSL provider, and cellular internet provided by local network carrier.

Windows Test

ExpressVPN works in my country, though it is not stable, only selected servers work. The reason why ExpressVPN is targeted by most ISP’s could be the fame of the VPN provider.

In both PC and Android, first singing in is not possible without another VPN connection. Therefore, I had to use a trial of another VPN to sign in to ExpressVPN. After signing in, ExpressVPN worked well on my PC, but only on a few servers (Berkshire-UK, Frankfurt-Germany and etc. worked for me).

Android Test

On Android, I had the same problem of logging in to my account, and had to use a trial version of another VPN. Actually, it is the case of most VPNs. After signing in to ExpressVPN, I connected to Italy-Milan server, which worked without problems.

I encountered two problems during my test. First, ExpressVPN did not connect to all available servers, and I had to spend some time to figure out working servers. Second, I could not use after a pop-up of “Updating…” message, which I could not close at all. The message seemed to disappear after a while, but it came back in no time.

These problems are not device-specific, because I asked my friends to test ExpressVPN, and they encountered similar issues. The problem, however, could be country specific, meaning that only in my country ExpressVPN is attacked heavily and cannot work properly.

An update regarding the second error, the error is resolved now.

To sum up, ExpressVPN manages to bypass the deep packet inspection firewall in my country on Windows and Android platforms, with the above issues. In addition, ExpressVPN is one of the rare VPNs that also work on iOS.

If you are not sure whether ExpressVPN is for you or not, I suggest you to check Country Guide section, where other users will test which VPNs work good in your country, alternatively try a free 7-day trial, to check whether the VPN works in your country.

Is ExpressVPN affordable? (ExpressVPN’s pricing)

I will be honest with this. If there is one thing that I don’t like about ExpressVPN, then it is the pricing. Even if you pay for a one year subscription, you end up paying $8.32 per month or $2.78 per device a month, because ExpressVPN allows 3 simultaneous connections.

Recently in 2019, ExpressVPN made a good move by increasing number of simultaneous connections to five devices. I considered the pricing ExpressVPN‘s major disadvantage, as it was expensive compared to the other providers. Now, when you subscribe to the annual plan, you end up paying $1.66 per device a month. The new price does not make ExpressVPN the most affordable VPN, but it is a huge improvement.

ExpressVPN accepts major credit cards, PayPal, Bitcoin, Sofort, Webmoney, AliPay, UnionPay, Yandex Money, GiroPay, Mint, OneCard and iDeal.

If you want to test ExpressVPN,  you can try the 7-day free trial. You can activate free trial by registering on a mobile device.

ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back-guarantee, in case you are not happy with their service.
