My First Impression

According to information given in various VPN review websites, LimeVPN is based in Hong Kong. However, I was not able to find information about when and where LimeVPN was founded. At least, this information is not given on their website. About us page gives no information about the company, only general indormation is given about features of LimeVPN.

The website has a nice design and it is easy to navigate. LimeVPN defines itself as “Cheap VPN servoce provider for $1”, which is true if you pay for 2 year subscription. The website, however, lacks live chat support and is available only in English. I have also noticed that some information is not updated on the website, for example number of simultaneous connections is 2 in basic plan, however on the FAQ page it is shown as 3.

Does LimeVPN keep logs?

LimeVPN has the worst Privacy Policy page I have ever seen on VPN websites. It literally gives no information about privacy policy, but explains how LimeVPN stores private information without information on which information is stored. The website also has Logging Policy, whichgives somewhat useful information about what is logged by LimeVPN and what is not.

Here, at first sight it seems that many information is not stored, but when you have a look closer, all of the mentioned data that is not logged is traffic logs (user activity). Even if on the main page LimeVPN is advertised as “No Logs Policy VPN”, here it is clearly indicated that LimeVPN logs IP address and connection (duration, bandwidth, etc.) logs.

To sum up, LimeVPN does not store:

  • traffic logs (i.e user activity)
And LimeVPN logs:
  • IP address
  • connection logs (i.e bandwidth, timestamps)

Does LimeVPN bypass Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) or similar VPN blocking firewalls?

Countries like China, Turkey, Russia etc. implement firewalls that block access to VPN services. As an example China uses the Great Wall of China (GFW) system to block most VPNs and proxies. Some VPN services use extra protocols so that users in those countries can bypass VPN block.

LimeVPN offers SoftEther protocol, which at the moment of writing this article is capable of evading DPI. However, the protocol is not offered in all platforms, it is only offered for Windows and Linux operating system.

On the VPN for China page, LimeVPN claims that it is able to overcome DPI in China with SoftEthe and SSTP protocols.

Here is a detailed explanation of SoftEther (source: softether.org):

SoftEther VPN (“SoftEther” means “Software Ethernet”) is one of the world’s most powerful and easy-to-use multi-protocol VPN software. It runs on Windows, Linux, Mac, FreeBSD and Solaris.

SoftEther VPN is open source. You can use SoftEther for any personal or commercial use for free charge.

SoftEther VPN is an optimum alternative to OpenVPN and Microsoft’s VPN servers. SoftEther VPN has a clone-function of OpenVPN Server. You can integrate from OpenVPN to SoftEther VPN smoothly. SoftEther VPN is faster than OpenVPN. SoftEther VPN also supports Microsoft SSTP VPN for Windows Vista / 7 / 8. No more need to pay expensive charges for Windows Server license for Remote-Access VPN function.

Is LimeVPN affordable? (LimeVPN’s pricing)

LimeVPN offers two plans, one of which is targeted for individuals with 2 concurrent connections, and other is for business customers, which allows up to 20 concurrent users. The basic plan is good, giving the price of $1.49 per month ($0.75 per device per month), when paid annually. As a side note, differently from most VPN providers LimeVPN allows simultaneous connections only if they are connected to same modem/IP address. The basic plan has most of important features with the exception of P2P/torrenting, if you need P2P you should go with the pro plan, which is $14.98 per month when paid annually. The price is of course is very high when compared to what I am used to see on VPN pricing plans. The main advantage of the pro paln is that it allows up to 20 simultaneous connections, which is $0.75 per user per month.

LimeVPN Pricing

LimeVPN accepts major credit/debit cards, PayPal, and Gift cards (MINT, Subway, Dollar General). On the payment options it is shown as if Bitcoin, Webmoney, etc. are accepted via Paymentwall, however that is not the case.

Unfortunately, no free trial is offerd by LimeVPN. If you want to try LimeVPN, they offer 7-day money-back-guarantee.

What features are offered by IVPN?

– Supported Platforms

LimeVPN supports Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS, Android and some routers. No standalone app is offered by LimeVPN for the platforms, users can use SoftEther software for Windows/Linux, or OpenVPN app for all operating systems.

– Supported Protocols

IVPN offers SOCKS5 proxy in addition to PPTP, SSTP, IPSec L2TP, IKEv2, SoftEther and OpenVPN protocols.

Not all protocols available on all platforms. SoftEther is available only on Windows and Linux, whereas SOCKS5 is available on Windows. OpenVPN, on the other hand is compatible with all platforms.

– Number of Servers

LimeVPN has 16 servers in 8 countries.

Conclusion

What I liked:

  • No traffic logs stored
  • SoftEther (bypass DPI) - Windows only
  • LimeVPN basic $0.75 per device/month

What I didn’t like:

  • Logs IP address and connection
  • No P2P/Torrenting on basic plan
  • No native apps at all
  • Limited number of servers
  • Limited payment options
