My First Impression

There is not much information about NVPN, neither on web, nor on the website of the VPN provider. According to information given on social media accounts NVPN is based in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and active since 2011.

NVPN has an average website at best, but one can find most of the needed information about the VPN provider.

Does NVPN keep logs?

You can find Privacy Policy of NVPN on Terms of Policy page. NVPN does not keep connection stamps, session info, bandwidth usage, traffic logs and IP addresses. NVPN does not even log simultaneous connected devices.

To sum up, NVPN does not store:

  • traffic logs (i.e user activity)
  • IP address
  • connection logs (bandwidth usage, timestamps, etc.)
As most of the VPN providers, NVPN (or 3rd party payment processors) keeps personal information of its users. In this case email address and payment information is stored.

Does NVPN bypass Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) or similar VPN blocking firewalls?

Countries like China, Turkey, Russia etc. implement firewalls that block access to VPN services. As an example China uses the Great Wall of China (GFW) system to block most VPNs and proxies. Some VPN services use extra protocols so that users in those countries can bypass VPN block.

NVPN offers three anti-DPI protocols: OpenVPN over SSL, OpenVPN with tls-crypt and OpenVPN with obfsproxy.

OpenVPN over SSL explained on AirVPN website:

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), are cryptographic protocols that provide communication security over the Internet. OpenVPN is already a VPN solution based on SSL/TLS. However, Deep Packet Inspection lets your ISP recognize the you are using an OpenVPN connection. Adding an additional SSL to connect OpenVPN over SSL is useful in all cases in which you wish to have all the security and features of OpenVPN, while at the same time you don’t want to let your ISP know that you’re using OpenVPN, at the price of a performance hit.

Advantages:

  • OpenVPN typical fingerprint can not be detected anymore. Useful if you live in a country which tries to disrupt OpenVPN connections when detected.
  • Contrarily to a “classic” SSL tunnel, there’s no need to configure each application in order to have it tunneled.

Disadvantages:

  • Performance hit

Explanation of tls-crypt given by a member of stackexchange.com:

In TLS mode, OpenVPN establishes a TLS session to perform a key exchange over that TLS session to obtain the keys used to encrypt/authenticate the tunnel payload data. This is a normal TLS session, just as if you’d open a HTTPS website in your browser, except that it won’t just perform server authentication but also client authentication and thus the client will require a cert with private key, too

Obfsproxy in words of Tor Project:

Obfsproxy is a tool that attempts to circumvent censorship, by transforming the Tor traffic between the client and the bridge. This way, censors, who usually monitor traffic between the client and the bridge, will see innocent-looking transformed traffic instead of the actual Tor traffic.

Testing NVPN

I could not yet test NVPN, because no free trial is offered, but plan to test it for sure. As for now, I assume that NVPN is able to bypass GFW like firewalls thanks to anti-DPI protocols like OpenVPN with SSL, tls-scrypt and obfsproxy. These protocols can be configured on Windows, Linux, Android and maybe macOS, but it is very likely that anti-DPI protocols cannot be configured on iOS devices.

In addition, I would like to mention that NVPN has one of the least attractive refund policies I have ever read.

Is NVPN affordable? (NVPN’s pricing)

You can purchase NVPN with shared or dedicated IP address, either monthly or annual subscription. Taking into account that, NVPN does not allow simultaneous devices, when paid annually monthly price per device will be $3.33, making it a bit expensive VPN service.

NVPN Pricing

NVPN accepts Paypal, Perfectmoney, Skrill, Bitcoin, Webmoney, Paysafecard, Amazon Giftcard, Paymentwall (Credit Cards/Bank/Mobile Payments), Qiwi, Yandex, Dash, Neo, Stratis, LTC, ETH, XMR, Decred, and Bitcoin Cash.

NVPN does not offer free-trial, you can test them by buying one-month subscription. I suggest first to pay only for a short period, because the refund policy is not “no questions asked refund policy”.

What features are offered by NVPN?

– Supported Platforms

NVPN supports Windows, MacOS, Linux, iOS and Android. NVPN can be configured manually using OpenVPN on various platforms. NVPN offers features like port forwarding, dedicated IP, anti-DPI protocols and etc.

– Supported Protocols

NVPN supports L2TP/IPSec, standard OpenVPN, OpenVPN over SSL, OpenVPN with tls-crypt and OpenVPN with obfsproxy protocols and SOCKS5 and Squid (encrypted SOCKS5) proxies.

Anti-DPI protocols are available on Windows, Linux, macOS and Android, whereas iOS users cannot use the protocols.

– Number of Servers

NVPN offers 67 servers in 36 countries. However, you can choose only one server when registering, and switching between servers is free one time only, afterwards you have to pay to change your server location.
