My First Impressions
VPN.ac is one of the VPNs that I have used for a long period. The VPN service is relatively a small one based in Romania and operated by Netsec Interactive Solutions SRL since 2009.
The website is well designed and well structured. I was not confused about where to look for specific information. Also, the team keeps the website up to date. The website, however, lacks live chat support, and like most of the VPN websites, it is available only in English.
Does VPN.ac keep logs?
To sum up, we can conclude that VPN.ac does not keep:
- Traffic logs
And, stores following logs:
- IP address
- connection logs (connection start/end time, bandwidth usage)
Does VPN.ac bypass Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and similar firewalls?
Countries like China, Turkey, Russia implement firewalls that block access to VPN services. As an example, China uses the Great Wall of China (GFW) system to block most VPNs and proxies. Some VPN providers offer extra protocols, often called Stealth VPN or anti-DPI protocols, that help users to bypass VPN block and access free internet.
VPN.ac offers two different “stealth protocols”.
The first one is OpenVPN with XOR obfuscation. XOR explanation by proprivacy.com:
XOR is usually pronounced Ex-or and stands for Exclusive or, a type of mathematical operation used by the XOR cipher. The XOR algorithm is basically a simple substitution cipher. In other words, it just replaces each alphanumeric in a string that is fed into it with another number.
The second “stealth VPN” is OpenVPN with ECC, which stands for Elliptic Curve. And, this is how VPN.ac defines Elliptic Curve:
Elliptic Curve is one of the most powerful types of cryptography today, it is future-proofing and is arguably significantly more secure than RSA. In our implementation we decided to use the secp256k1 elliptic curve. ECC is being used during the OpenVPN tunnel authentication and key exchange, which is the most important part of VPN communication.
The protocols are not available on all platforms. As an example, the iOS version of VPN.ac app lacks the feature because of Apple’s regulations.
VPN.ac‘s OpenVPN+XOR and OpenVPN+ECC bypass DPI effectively. The protocols are available on all platforms. I have used VPN.ac for a long time, and can say that VPN.ac is one of the best VPN’s to use in countries like China, Iran, etc.
The only issue was that, my ISP blocked the login page of the app, and I had to use another VPN for the first login.
Is VPN.ac affordable?
VPN.ac has subscription plans with duration starting from 1 month to 2 years. When paid the 1 year price of $58, the cost per device a month will be $0.80. The pricing is affordable, as it is slightly below my affordable price point of $1. Even though, the price is not high, you could get the VPN for a better price on Cyber Monday or using a coupon. And, the good news is that generally VPN.ac automatically applies a recurring 10% discount, bringing the price per device a month down to $0.73.
VPN.ac accepts Credit/Debit Cards, PayPal, Unionpay, Alipay, Gift Cards, Webmoney, iDEAL, Giropay, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Ethereum, Dash, Dogecoin, Monero, Ripple and more.
The VPN service provider offers a paid 7 day trial for $2. Also, VPN.ac has a 7 day money bank guarantee. You may not get the refund if the payment method is not refundable.
