My First Impressions

VyprVPN is another VPN service I am familiar with, and I have been using for a long time. The VPN service is provided by a Swiss company Golden Frog GmbH, which has been around since 2009.

The website has a good design and easy to navigate. It is easy to find an information you are looking for on the website. I encountered no problems using the website. The website has a live chat support, which  all the major VPN providers should offer. In addition, the website is available on English, Chinese, French, Dutch, Turkish, Portuguese, German and Spanish languages.

Does VyprVPN keep logs?

VyprVPN, which is based in Switzerland, is far from the “Five Eyes” and “Enemies of Internet” countries. On the website, information about the logging policy of VyprVPN is shown on the Privacy Policy and FAQ pages.

Here, the VPN provider states that it does not track user activity, IP addresses, VPN sessions, and time logs. However, there is no information about whether VyprVPN logs bandwidths usage. Also, there is an audit of  VyprVPN’s no-logging policy by a security company called Leviathan Security.

To recap, we can conclude that VyprVPN does not monitor:

  • Traffic logs (user activity)
  • IP addresses
  • Connection logs (timestamps, DNS queries, IP assigned by VyprVPN)
Moreover, VyprVPN mentions that, if a court of competent jurisdiction orders they will share personal data.

Does VyprVPN bypass Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and similar firewalls?

Countries like China, Turkey, Iran, Russia implement firewalls that block access to VPN services. As an example, China uses the Great Wall of China (GFW) system to block most VPNs and proxies. Some VPN providers offer extra protocols, often called Stealth VPN or anti-DPI protocols, that help users to bypass VPN block and access free internet.

VyprVPN offers a stealth protocol called Chameleon. The protocol scrambles OpenVPN connection, so it is disguises the OpenVPN fingerprint from VPN blocking firewalls like GFW.

The protocol is not available on all platforms. As an example, the iOS version of VyprVPN lacks the Chameleon protocol, because of Apple’s regulations.

Testing VyprVPN

As usual, I test the VPN on Windows 7 PC, and an Android phone running Android 6.0.1. I am testing on an ADSL internet provided by the local telecom company, and cellular internet provided by our local mobile operator.

VyprVPN offers custom apps for most of the platforms. The Windows and Android app are almost identical, both have the same design and features. The apps include features like, kill-switch, custom DNS, connection per app, and block malicious site

I started my test with Windows. And, I have used VyprVPN before, then it connected without a problem. But, not this time. VyprVPN has been struggling bypassing the firewall since the beginning of 2019. And during the test, VyprVPN failed to bypass the restrictions.

Next, I performed the test on my Android device. When I tried to connect, the VPN stuck on “connecting”. When VyprVPN tries to troubleshoot the connection, the result shows that none of the protocols have a connection.

VyprVPN Android test

To sum up, in the tests VyprVPN could not bypass the deep packet inspection in my country on Windows and Android platforms.

As a side note, I would like to mention that the Chameleon protocol worked like a charm for a long time and evaded the deep packet inspection. But, since a couple of months it is not the case. The Chameleon protocol is not able to bypass the firewall, anymore.

Will it be able to bypass the firewall in the future?

Time will show, but VyprVPN has everything to realize that.

Is VyprVPN affordable?

VyprVPN has two different subscription plans: normal and premium plans. The normal VyprVPN plan supports up to 3 simultaneous devices, whereas the premium supports up to 5 devices, includes “stealthVPN” Chamaleon protocol, and VyprVPN Cloud. Since we are interested in stealth VPN, we are analyzing price of the Premium Plan. When subscribed for a year, the price for a device per month is $1.33. The price is slightly expensive when compared to similar VPNs.

VyprVPN Pricing Plans

VyprVPN accepts only major Credit/Debit Cards and PayPal.

The VPN service provider used to offer a 3-day free trial, however they have changed it and now they offer 30 day money back guarantee instead of the free trial.

What features are offered by VyprVPN?

– Supported Platforms

VyprVPN supports Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Smart TVs, and selected routers. All the platforms have a custom app. The VPN provider also offers kill-switch, malicious website blocker and its own DNS servers. Also, there is a feature called VyprVPN Cloud, which is allows you to deploy VyprVPN to your own server on DigitalOcean or Amazon Web Services. If you would like to download torrent files, VyprVPN is not for you, as they block torrents/P2P. VyprVPN allows torrenting now.

– Supported Protocols

VyprVPN offers PPTP, L2TP/IPsec, OpenVPN, and a scrambled OpenVPN protocol called Chameleon.

– Number of Servers

VyprVPN provides its services with 73 servers from 64 countries all around the world.

Conclusion

What I liked:

  • No logs stored (traffic, IP, con.)
  • Chameleon (anti-DPI)
  • Kill-switch, malicious site block, own DNS, VyprVPN Cloud
  • Torrent/P2P allowed

What I didn’t like:

  • Price, $1.33 per device a month
  • No anti-DPI protocol on iOS
  • Limited payment options
